Overview & Format

The European qualifiers are being conducted by UEFA, for slots to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

There are 54 teams in UEFA competing.

UEFA has 16 slots in the 2026 World Cup finals.

The qualification is divided into two rounds:

1. Group stage (first round): Teams are divided into 12 groups (some groups of 4 teams, some of 5 teams).

2. Play-offs (second round): The 12 group runners-up, plus 4 best non-qualifying teams from the UEFA Nations League ranking, enter play-offs.

From the group stage:

The winners of each group (12 groups) qualify directly for the World Cup.

The runners-up go to the play-off round for a chance at the remaining 4 spots.

The play-off format: single-leg semifinals (on 26 March 2026) and finals (on 31 March 2026).
